What are Aids and Adaptations?

Aids and adaptations are changes made to your home to help you live independently and safely. They can range from simple equipment to major structural changes.

If you or someone in your household has a disability or mobility issue, we can help make your home more suitable for your needs.

Types of Adaptations

Minor Adaptations

These are smaller changes that cost less than £1,000 and include:

• Grab rails and handrails
• Additional banister rails
• Half-step to front or rear door
• Lever taps
• Door entry systems
• Key safes

Major Adaptations

These are larger changes that cost more than £1,000 and include:

• Level access showers
• Stairlifts
• Ramps
• Door widening
• Extensions (e.g., ground floor bedroom or bathroom)
• Through-floor lifts

How to Request an Adaptation

Step 2: Occupational Therapy Assessment

For most adaptations, you'll need an assessment from an Occupational Therapist (OT). They will:

• Visit your home
• Assess your needs
• Recommend suitable adaptations
• Send us a report with their recommendations

You can request an OT assessment through your local council's social services department.

Step 3: We Review the Request

Once we receive the OT's recommendations, we will:

• Review the request
• Carry out a survey if needed
• Discuss the options with you
• Arrange for the work to be done

Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG)

For major adaptations, you may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant from your local council. This is a means-tested grant that can help pay for adaptations.

Who Can Apply?

• Disabled adults and children
• Tenants, homeowners, and private renters

Maximum Grant

The maximum grant is £30,000 in England (£25,000 in Wales).

How to Apply

Contact your local council's housing department to apply for a DFG. They will assess your eligibility and guide you through the process.

Timescales

The time it takes to complete an adaptation depends on its complexity:

• Minor adaptations: Usually completed within 4-6 weeks of approval
• Major adaptations: Can take 6-12 months or longer, depending on the work required and funding arrangements

Costs

Minor adaptations: Usually provided free of charge if recommended by an OT.

Major adaptations: May be funded through a Disabled Facilities Grant. If you're not eligible for a grant, we'll discuss other options with you.
